A Family Business

In the beginning

From the beginning, it’s always been about the land, the people and the future. Our story dates back to 1982 when Adam and Annabel Spiers first began farming in Amberley, Canterbury. Their shared love for farming, their ambition to create something together, and their willingness to embrace the challenges of the land has shaped every milestone and achievement throughout their journey. Together, with love and determination, they’ve poured their energy into creating a business that reflects their values. One they’re proud to pass on to the next generation.

Hardly a day goes by without Adam and Annabel working towards developing productive farmland and horticulture. They can usually be found mucking in on the farm, planting one of the numerous trees on APG’s properties or keeping their green fingers busy in Annabel’s renowned gardens.

If you can’t find Adam and Annabel on farm, it’s most likely because they will be with their four children, Sara, Amanda, Sam and Sophie or keeping up with their 11 grandchildren!

Establishing a firm foundation

Since those early days in Amberley, Adam and Annabel have developed numerous farming properties in Canterbury and Otago. Together, they take immense pride and care in establishing productive and sustainable farms and orchards held to the highest standards. Their wisdom, expertise, attention to detail and can-do attitude is deeply valued at APG. Adam and Annabel continue to play critical roles in the business, with Adam focusing on the avocado orchard and further land development opportunities.

The next generation

Now the next generation is stepping forward. Alongside Adam and Annabel, their son Sam and son-in-law Luke Thompson, together with Sam and Luke's wives Alice and Sara, are now proud joint owners of APG. From the head office in Wānaka, Sam and Luke lead the business with the same values and long-term thinking that shaped its humble beginnings.

Following in the footsteps of Adam and Annabel, Sam and Luke are committed to carrying the family’s legacy forward. They are here for the long haul and the vision that Adam and Annabel began is at the heart of everything they do: growing, nourishing, always, now and for future generations.

Today, APG has grown into a team of more than thirty people working across sheep and beef finishing farms, dairy, livestock grazing and procurement, and a cherry orchard. Together with Darling Group, APG also co-owns an avocado orchard in New Zealand’s North Island.
